Personality: Elend Venture is, while an emperor, a scholar at heart. He devised his own laws upon philosophical books he had read, all in rejection of the Lord Ruler's empire. He wished dearly to find and talk to a skaa, just to find proof that what they had been told—that skaa were inferior to noblemen—was false. He didn't quite openly rebel – as that would be putting his head under an ax and he wasn't quite that stupid—but he did meet with heirs of other houses that were most definitely not aligned with his house and read books he really shouldn't have.
To aid with this minor rebellion of his, he cultivated a sloppy appearance; one of ill fitting suits and constantly strained pockets from books. Only the work of several months from Tindwyl have turned the fop into a man who commands respect by walking in. He has taken a bit of time to learn how to be not-quite so honest, to no longer hedge or apologize so easily, to command or make it clear without directly saying so that he expected to be obeyed. He understands that how he dresses influences how people see him; the most obvious being when he got a haircut and a white military uniform and people immediately straightened upon seeing him. His uniform was white on purpose, to provide a contrast, as ash falls near constantly and being able to keep something a pure white was rather amazing and required special soaps and daily washing.
Perhaps his greatest weakness how easily he slips back into old, foppish habits when irritated or frustrated. This is a sign of the other main weakness—who he is is new to him. He has had to change to become a better ruler, which is what he wanted, but he has not quite comfortable as both warrior and scholar. He hasn't yet found his 'balance' of the two halves. He comments that he has become so wrapped up in politics and worrying over the city that he's forgotten how to be an impolite recluse, which is him missing the scholar. A few pages later, when he finds out one of his friends had followed them—after leaving a bloodthirsty koloss horde ready to attack Luthadel—he forgives him. Then Elend tells Jastes(his friend) that his kingdom cannot forgive him, and strikes his head from his shoulders. He has good traits of both—Tindwyl comments early in the book that "Your king is a humble scholar and thinker, but he has the will of a warrior. He is a man who has the nerve to fight, and I think—perhaps—you have yet to see the best of him." As the woman who was quite harsh to him, and as a woman who had memorized into her copperminds the biographies of other leaders, she is in the best place for judgments like this.
As a ruler, he really wants the best for his people. He wants the best for the people to the point where he takes them, immediately, from a dictatorship to a constitutional monarchy—something Lord Ashweather Cett says is the stupidest idea ever. It doesn't really make sense to go from a two-class system under a dictator to an open democracy. Under Elend's laws, all meetings of the Assembly (in American gov. terms, his House + Senate) are open to the public—not that they have any opinion in what goes on, but that they can come and watch the people elected decide on topics. The king is voted in by the Assembly, and the assembly has a "No Confidence" clause, with which they can depose the king at any time with. His 'circle', which is made of Tindwyl and Kelsier's crew, find that to be foolish as well, but Elend replies that he would only want to rule if the people wanted him. He would find other ways to help the city if they didn't vote him back in. It is only with reluctance that he returns the Central Dominance to a Monarchy, under himself and Vin, although it was Vin who declared Elend Emperor. He says he has realized his views were simplistic, honorable, but unfinished.
He is, in some ways, a love-struck young man. He does think, at times, on how his wife looks quite fine in dresses – but he does prefer her in trousers because he likes the tight clothing on her. Also when Vin mentions that he's a bad influence on her, because she has started sleeping without clothing, and what if they were attacked and she needed to fight, he casually replies that he wouldn't mind watching that. Perhaps the silliest example of his blind love for her is a point where she and another Mistborn take out 300 men between the two of them, as well as nearly destroying the building. Upon the revelation that she had not been Burning atium, she hears an inexplicable thumping noise that draws her closer to somewhere, and that, by the rules of Allomancy, her Burning pewter at the same time as the Thug that she had head-butted—and killed with that head-butt—shouldn't have cause the severe mismatch of injuries, he decides that he should trust her on what she thinks she needs to do. Never mind that a good amount of the population is starting to think her "a bit... rickety", Elend loves Vin, she must have valid reasons for what she tries to do, and he will trust that she will eventually be able to word them to him. (This becomes very important in the third book but he's not from there and doesn’t know that yet) The side effect of this love-struckness is that he will not stand for Vin to be insulted. You can mock him however you like, but don't talk bad about Vin.
Most of Elend's 'tells' are verbal. When off balance, he does slip back into lots of "Ah-" and "Now, see here-" sort of additions to his words. One main physical tell is that when he's nervous, he clenches his fist. Vin notices this, as does Tindwyl, and he is slowly working on it. It is never a good thing for a politician, let alone ruler, to have an obvious sign of discomfort.
Special Abilities: Due to having swallowed Larasium, Elend is a full Mistborn – and as powerful as a first generation one, rather than one diluted through generations. This means that he can Burn Pewter, Tin, Steel, Iron, Bronze, Copper, Brass, Zinc, Gold, Electrum, Aluminum, Duralumin, Atium, Larasium, Cadmium, Cerrobend, Nicrosil, and Chromium. Atium is unavailable in Afterliving
How did your character die? Stabbed in the chest with an ax then decapitated. Ruin was not pleased. (Canon death, book 3)
Other: Elend means misery in German

First Person: Q&A please?
Third Person: The ease of his breathing might have been what woke Elend up. While it was a wonderful feeling, after being fairly sure that he was going to struggle to breathe his last at any moment, it was also quite... disorienting. Almost as disorienting as the bright light, blue .... something with white puffs overhead, and the significantly uncomfortable position he was laying in.
With a groan, Elend rolled over, ending up face down in dusty dirt and surprisingly unpained. With a cough to get the taste out of his mouth, he sat up, lifting –
"Oh, really, this isn't quite fair." Why had he been buried in an apron? Of course, why wasn't he still buried, even if someone had got the ridiculous notion to bury him in cook-clothes. "Breeze, if this was your idea of a joke-" Elend paused, still sitting in the dirt and holding up the brown-dust smeared cloth. If he had been buried in an apron, presumably in Breeze's idea of a joke, which meant he should be dead... and Breeze shouldn't be. Grousing to the air wouldn't do anything, unless Breeze was also dead and nearby.
A quick glance confirmed that Breeze wasn't nearby, might not be dead, and thus Elend Venture should shut up before someone decided that he was crazy. Not that pulling up his apron and shirt in the middle of this odd dirt patch—next to this lump of brown-dirt—was any less likely to be seen as mad, but he had something to check.
"Pewter isn't the save all everyone seems to think it is." Elend mused aloud—again not helping any thoughts to his sanity—as he lightly felt his stomach. "... But it seems the surgeons are better with cadavers than people." Because he couldn't find any trace that the mist spirit had stabbed him.
